That being said, coaching isn’t magic. All too often, people have the desire to improve but fail to achieve the exponential growth they deserve. Simple tips and tricks can make a world of difference.

Over the past decade, highly sought coaches Karen Davis and Alex Mill have partnered with a wide range of clients, from successful entrepreneurs and Fortune 100 executives to individuals simply looking for more peace and balance in a hectic world. They’ve seen people surpass all of their goals and expectations while others took longer than they should have to make any real progress.

In this book, Davis and Mill present a straightforward guide to ensure that you get the highest possible ROI from your one-on-one coaching relationship. You’ll learn to drive the most value from your sessions, easily carve out time to take action, and effectively assess your progress and course correct—if needed.

A Refreshing Reminder of Best Practices

“As an executive coach, who also receives regular coaching, the chapter on Making the Most of Your Sessions is like a refreshing splash of cold water in the face. You will probably find yourself slapping your forehead like Homer Simpson and saying “Doh!” I wish I had started these practices about two years ago!” For example, this chapter really helped remind me about the importance of bringing to my coach the hardest challenges that I don’t want to talk about, first, and keeping a running tally in between sessions of the most important topics for my progress. And as a coach, I realized how many times I’ve allowed a client to launch into a shallow overview of their week as if they were catching up with a friend, instead of digging into their most critical needs and going deeper much earlier in a session.”

A Different View on Coaching

“So many books are written about how to be a coach and how to improve coaching skills. Karen and Alex take a completely different approach and dive deep into what it takes to be an ultimate coaching client. They weave years of their personal experiences as coaches and coaching clients to offer tangible and actionable examples to support coaches and their clients. This book is as much for coaching clients as it is for coaches.”

About The Authors

Karen Davis, Executive Coach

After 25 years in managerial and executive leadership roles in the business-to-business technology and services space, Karen made the decision to change her life by working to transform the lives of others. Consequently, she has been coaching, consulting, and facilitating leadership workshops for individuals, small businesses, and Fortune 100 companies for well over a decade now—and she is a Professionally Certified Coach through the International Coaching Federation (ICF). Today, her practice is mostly one-on-one deep coaching with executives, entrepreneurs, and executive coaches. Along the way, she’s learned from some of the very best in the coaching business, including Steve Chandler, Rich Litvin, Steve Hardison, Byron Katie, Werner Erhard, Julio Olalla, and George and Linda Pransky. She also coauthored two other books—When All Boats Rise: 12 Coaches on Service as the Heart of a Thriving Practice and Unconventional Wisdom: Stories Beyond the Mind to Awaken the Heart—that focus on leading and serving.

Alex Mill, Zen Life Coach

Alex trained at a Zen Buddhist monastery for nearly 14 years, during which time he spent more than 10,000 hours in meditation. There, he learned how his own thoughts kept him stuck and how he could access freedom to authentically succeed in all areas of his life. When he ultimately left the monastery, he took many of the teachings with him and actually built them into his own coaching practice. Today, he focuses on helping people achieve success both powerfully and peacefully. The idea for this book was born out of Alex’s understanding of how resistance and sabotage can prevent people from getting what they want, and how to overcome that. Alex is also the author of several books: A Shift to Love: Zen Stories and Lessons; Meditation and Reinventing Yourself; Living the Zen Life: Practicing Conscious, Compassionate Awareness (Volumes One–Three); Practicing Presence: Learning the Art of Directing the Attention!
