When it comes to coaching, the math is pretty simple. The more you put into it, the more you get out of it. If you put some amount of effort into coaching, you will get some results. You’ll probably learn a few things about yourself, come up with better ways to approach certain problems, and make progress quicker than you would have on your own. But to truly get the most out of coaching, you have to give it your all.

This is especially true in your coaching sessions themselves. While these meetings are only one part of your total commitment, they are an important part. They are most of what you’re paying for, and it’s important that you prioritize and embrace them.

We have found that in order to get the most out of your sessions, you must dedicate time before and after to 1) mentally prepare 2) internalize your insights and lessons learned, and 3) take action.

Here are three tips to help ensure you are optimizing your coaching sessions. We’ve also created an interactive free guide that dives deeper into each of these while providing reflective prompts you can use to turn these tips into action.

Three Tips for Getting the Most Out of Each Coaching Session:

 1. Come Prepared—Keep a list of what you want to talk about and work on during each meeting, so you and your coach can jump right into the topics you want to prioritize that day.

2. Be Open to Insights—During your session, make mental or written notes when a new concept or idea drops in. Be completely open to new possibilities.

3. Play Back the Highlights Reel—Following your sessions, give yourself the time and space to replay it in your mind’s eye, just like top athletes do after a big game.

Coaching isn’t magic; we can’t just wave a wand and manifest outcomes. It takes active participation on both sides of the relationship. By incorporating these tips into your process, you’ll be much more likely to create value in coaching.
